  1. (1509-1564) John Calvin, born in France, was an important theologian and leader of the 16th-century Protestant Reformation. His book Institutes of the Christian Religion  laid out the tenets of Protestantism. He established a church in Geneva, and his teachings influenced the Church of England and the Puritans of the New World.
